Small airport München-Memmingen is located 110 km (70 miles) west of Munich in the foothills of the Alps. It is the highest-altitude airport in Germany.

Several budget airlines fly between Bavarian town of Memmingen and different European destinations. The majority of flights are operated by three airlines – Ryanair, Wizz Air and Germanwings. The Irish company Ryanair connects Memmingen with Britain, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Wizz Air, a low-cost Hungarian airline flies to/from the Balkans, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania and Ukraine. Germanwings, a low-cost subsidiary of Lufthansa, flies to/from Berlin and Hamburg. Sometimes, ticket prices are just ridiculous, especially for advance online booking. How about a round trip to London for €30? You can get such a ticket, really. However, pay attention to the fine print. For example, Ryanair charges €30-40 per piece of checked luggage each way. There could be some other unusual charges, such as for checking-in at the airport and not online. As a general rule, if you want a cheap flight, give up comfort and services. However, such budget airlines are very popular today among Europeans. The Memmingen airport is convenient in that respect that one can easily and quickly get from it to the well-known German, Austrian and Swiss Alpine ski resorts. Oberstdorf, Ischgl, Kappl, Elm, Flims and several others are all within the range of 100-150 km (60-90 miles) from Memmingen. The Allgäu-Airport-Express company offers private transfers by a van from the airport to these destinations.

Getting to and from the city of Munich

The Munich-Memmingen airport is pretty far from the city. Of course, one can rent a car; it is a little over one hour drive, mostly on the autobahn. There are also two public transportation options:

  1. Ride on a comfortable Allgäu-Airport-Express bus to/from the Munich main train station (Hauptbahnhof). The buses run 5 times a day on weekdays and 7 times a day on weekends. Ticket price: €13-15, journey time: about 1.5 hours.
  2. Go by train to/from Munich to/from the Memmingen train station. The latter is located only 4.5 km from the airport, it is about 10-15 minutes ride on a local bus. The local buses run frequently and regularly.
