Munich Museums – Art, History and Modern Technology

Bavarian Museum Munich is known as a major cultural center and, of course, there are quite a few museums in and around the city. Well, how could it be otherwise, when there is such a rich history here – kings, wars, revolutions, and so on. It is just impossible to see all in a few days tourists usually spend in the city. It would probably be unrealistic and unnecessary to try to see everything or even most of the attractions. Long walks through the museum halls may be tiring and will eventually become boring even in the most exiting places. However, even during a short vacation one can have a look at the most significant galleries and exhibitions. In this section, we have highlighted those museums that are specific to Munich, which one cannot find anywhere else. Of course, tastes differ, so not everyone may agree with our choice. That’s okay, there are plenty of choices in Munich to satisfy any taste.

So, what museums are the best of the best? Here is a short list according to our own preferences. First, the German Museum. This museum of science and technology is second to none in all of Europe with regard to both the size and interesting exhibits. Second, the BMW Museum. This is understandable, since Munich is the birthplace of the BMW corporation and the location of its headquarters. Third, the Lenbachhaus Gallery. Among numerous art exhibits in the gallery, there is a large collection of paintings by famous Russian expressionist artist Wassily Kandinsky, who is very revered in Germany. Fourth, there are three Pinakotheks to choose from. The Alte Pinakothek displays the works of the great masters of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages, while the New Pinakothek and Modern Pinakothek show paintings from more recent epochs. Lastly, there is one place which would not be entirely correct to call a museum. This is Dachau memorial site, a former Nazi concentration camp. It would be desirable for most people to visit this place.
